Even though the hostel sits on Weinbergsweg, if you take a right out of the door and walk up the street you are soon on Kastanienallee. This street is well known for its nice bars and cafes and if you walk up there at any time you will find lots of people milling around.
Carry on up the street for about 5-10 minutes and walk up past Schwedter Strasse and then on your right you will find Morgenrot. This is one of the trendier bars on Kastanienallee, but a lovely place to stop and have a drink, whilst observing the artists and writers talk amongst themselves.
The next intersection you come across as you wander, a little drunk by now, up Kastanienallee is Oderberger Strasse. If you turn left down here and walk up for a minute you will find a bar named Nemo. Although this bar is sometimes quiet earlier on, it has a pool table and pinball machine, as well as good priced beer and comfortable surroundings. Remember where you are for the nightcap on the way home.
After Nemo, walk back down to Kastanienallee and carry on up the street. Not far up the road you will see Schwarzsauer Café on your left. This really is where all the cool kids of Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte hangout. This place is nice during both day and night but can often be busy. If you see a table grab it and have a beer or two, it’s never too loud for a conversation, and you can get a coffee whatever time it is.
We are now entering the last leg of our journey, which takes us to the top of Kastanienallee and to U Bahnhof Eberswalder Strasse. Here, you walk across the road and take Pappel Allee, check the road signs as there are six roads here (but it’s the third either way). Up Pappel Allee you will see neon lights on the right side of the road for a cocktail bar (NOT the bar you want) and opposite this you will see a bar on the first floor, called Klub der Republik. This place has live music or a DJ most nights and has good affordable cocktails. It is decorated in the East German style and stands out as one of the nicest looking bars in the area. Its often busy and is standing room only, but the music will make you want to move your feet anyway. Beware, you do pay an extra 1€ on your first drink for the DJ. Stay until the early hours of the morning and then all you need to do is stumble back down Kastanienallee to home.
