The exhibition is situation by Friedrich Strasse S-Bahn station and is in the purpose built departure hall off the official crossing point between East and West Berlin. The building was the scene of so many farewells as the Berlin Wall ripped families a part that it acquired the nick name “The palace of tears”. The exhibition tells the story of every day life in a divided Germany and is a nice easy introduction into the topic. There are a lot of personal testimony, bits and bobs from back in the day like border stamps and what I liked the most the checkpoint booths. Each person passing through the border were taken individually it a little booth so the check could be carried out in secret.
